Arsenal news LIVE: Gunners top Premier League at Christmas but Wenger backs City to WIN title – updates

Good morning Arsenal fans

With the six-week World Cup break imminent, Arsenal will remain on top of the Christmas tree until New Year’s Eve at the earliest.

The last time the Gunners were top on the 25th December was 2007, when Leon Jackson topped the charts with When You Believe.

Arsenal fans were already celebrating after Man City failed to close the gap, and some took to Twitter to spread the joy.

One person wrote: “Polite reminder that Arsenal Football Club are top of the Premier League not by chance or luck but on merit.”

Another added: “I’m going to spend the entire World Cup period gloating about Arsenal top of the table .. and there’s nothing football Twitter can do about it.”

A third simply said: “Arsenal top at Xmas… love to see it.”

While SunSport columnist Piers Morgan also chipped in with the celebrations, tweeting a video of a dancing Santa Claus.Jamie O’Hara has said believes Arsenal will falter in the last month of the title race.

O’Hara told talkSPORT: “I think Arsenal are going to be there. With a month to go, I think Arsenal are going to be right amongst it.

“How close they’ll be, in front of behind Man City, I don’t know. But they’re going to be there.

“For me, Manchester City are just going to have the experience in those moments. You saw what happened to Arsenal last season when they were trying to get in the top four, they crumbled.

“They crumbled. Is it a different Arsenal when it gets to that point?

“When it gets to that point, they’re going to be fighting for the title, and yes – they are fighting for the title. But when it comes to the last month of the season, I don’t think they’ve got the mentality yet to win the league.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been credited with an interest in Shakhtar Donetsk forward Mykhaylo Mudryk.

And Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano believes a move to the Gunners would be great for his career.

“For sure Arsenal remain interested and in contact to discuss the Mudryk deal,” Romano told Caught Offside.

“They like him, but the race is open and Shakhtar want way more than rumoured €50-55m.

“I think Arsenal is the perfect place for him: Premier League, ambitious project, young players and excellent manager/board.”
