Now fans are demanding a bank holiday to mark the special occasion – with supporters doing the same ahead of the Euro 2021 final, which England’s men team lost.

One fan took to Twitter, writing: “Since England won, I think we deserve a bank holiday.”

Another added: “Petition for a bank holiday seen as England Women done what England Men can’t.”

And a third said: “Well done England women. Surely we get a bank holiday?”

Others noted the fact it is a bank holiday in Scotland today – making it even stranger there is not one in England.

A supporter tweeted: “I see it’s a bank holiday today in Scotland, why is it not here in England due to the Lionesses’ win at the Euros.”

A second fan said in agreement: “Scotland have a bank holiday today to celebrate England winning the Euros 😂😂. Well planned.”

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer also backed the calls a few days ago, proposing a “proper day of celebration” following the victory.

While there will be no bank holiday, thousands of fans will be able to celebrate with the players in Trafalgar Square on Monday.

The event will be hosted by pundit and former Lioness Alex Scott and will include a Q&A session with the players and manager Sarina Wiegman.
