‘There is no harm in having a new captain’ – Ravi Shastri echoes opinion of Rohit Sharma having to leave captaincy

Current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is continuously on the receiving end of hard critical analysis from the fans and former Indian cricketers as well. Some of the former veterans of the game including the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Harbhajan Singh have stressed the fact that the current scenario of T20I cricket is demanding a change in the leadership of the Indian cricket team.

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri is the most recent entry in this list of veterans who are not happy with the outing of the current management of team India. Without being critical of Rohit Sharma, Shastri stated that it wouldn’t be a wrong decision to change the captain of the team in the shortest format of the game.

“For T20 cricket, there is no harm in having a new captain. Because the volume of cricket is such, that for one player to play all three formats of the game is never going to be easy,” said the former Indian all-rounder to the journalists before the first T20I of three-match series between India and New Zealand.

“If Rohit is already leading in Tests and ODIs, there is no harm in identifying a new T20I captain and if his name is Hardik Pandya, so be it,” he added later.

Notably, Shastri also came up with an opinion on the participation of Indian players in overseas leagues. He went on to stand with what current head coach Rahul Dravid said a few days back.

“There is enough domestic cricket for all these players to get absorbed in the system and get an opportunity. Plus, you get these India A tours, and you get a lot of these other tours, where at one given time you might have two Indian teams playing in the future, where the opportunity will come for the other lot to go somewhere else whilst India is in another country – to go play and see what you know they can do,” concluded Shastri.
