Honduras international Jerry Bengtson was the guilty party for the miss.

Bengtson, who plays as a striker for Honduras first division side CD Olimpia, found himself in a great position to score against Diriangén FC after peeling off to the near post from a set piece.

A free kick was whipped towards the back post and almost resulted in a goal as the ball hit the post after the goalkeeper failed to reach the ball upon rushing out.

The deflection off of the woodwork then fell to Bengtson, but he somehow managed to miscue his shot and fluffed his lines despite the net being wide open for a tap-in.

Fans online were quick to lambast the 35-year-old’s effort.

One fan on Reddit said: “Does he know you can use your legs?”

A second user said: “Christ. That is horrendous.”

A third user went a step further, proclaiming: “This is one of the worst misses I have ever seen.

“I am not one to just hate or abuse players but I cannot possibly think of a player I would (have) expected it more from.”

One Twitter user even went as far as to suggest Bengston lose six months of his salary for the miss.

Bengston did make up for it later on however, bagging a goal in the 19th minute as Olimpia ran out 4-0 winners in the CONCACAF League game.

As it would turn out, it is not the first time he has been guilty of this either.

He produced a similarly embarrassing effort against Switzerland at the 2014 World Cup.

The strangest part about this incident is Bengtson actually has a decent goal record.

He has 22 goals in 65 games for Honduras and 127 goals in 326 games at club level – a career strike rate of better than one goal in every three games.
